Drafts, Publish and Update

Nothing you write reaches anyone else until you say so. A new page stays a private draft until you publish it, and changes to an existing page only appear when you update it. That way you can write, rethink and tidy up in peace, and readers only ever see finished work.

A new page: Publish

While you write a new page, it is a draft that only you can see; it is not in the page tree and it does not turn up in search. Publish, at the top right, makes it a real page:

• It becomes version 1 in the page’s history.

• Anyone watching the space is told about it.

• Anyone you mentioned with @ is told they were mentioned.

Changing a page: Edit and Update

To change a published page, choose Edit above it. When you are done, the button at the top right says Update instead of Publish. Each update adds a new version to the page’s history, so nothing that was there before is lost; see History and restoring.

Below the page, What changed? (optional) takes a few words about the change, such as fixed the dates or added the budget. They are shown beside the version in the history, which makes it much easier to find a change later.

Leaving the editor

• Close, beside Publish or Update, leaves without saving. On a new page it throws the draft away. On a page you are changing, it goes back to the page as it was.

• Leaving any other way, such as a link, the back button or another page in the tree, stops to ask what you want: Publish and leave (or Update and leave), Discard page (or Leave unpublished), or Stay in the editor.

• Closing the tab or the browser makes the browser ask whether you really want to leave.

If the page changed while you were editing

If someone else updated the page after you started, Tesria does not overwrite their work. It stops, highlights the difference in the editor, and asks you to accept or reject it; then choose Update again.
