Mentions and notifications
Notifications are how Tesria tells you something happened that you care about: someone mentioned you, commented on a page you follow, or changed it. They collect in the bell at the top of every page, and, if you like, arrive by email as well.
Nothing is sent to you until you ask for it, apart from mentions: you choose what to hear about by watching pages and spaces. See Watching.
The bell
The bell is at the top right, beside your avatar. A red number on it counts what you have not read yet (it stops at 99+). It checks for new notifications every half minute, so there is nothing to refresh.
Click the bell to see your latest 50 notifications, newest first, with the unread ones highlighted. Each says who did what, on which page:
Click a notification to open the page it is about. That also marks it read.
Mark all read clears the count without opening anything.
You’re all caught up. means there is nothing in the list.
What you are told about

Never about your own changes. Publishing a page you watch does not notify you.
Never about a page you cannot open. If you lose access to a page later, its notifications disappear from your bell too.
Administrators also get security alerts, such as a failed backup. Clicking one opens the Security page in Administration. See Security (administration).
Mentions
A mention is the one notification you get without watching anything, because someone asked for your attention by name. You can be mentioned in two places:
On a page. Someone types @ and your name in the editor. You are told when they publish or update the page, and only the first time: mentioning you again in a later update does not notify you twice. See Mention.
In a comment. You are told when the comment is posted, or when an edit adds your name. See Comments.
Either way, you are only told if you can open the page.
By email
The same notifications can come by email, straight away or as one email a day. That is a choice on your profile, and it starts switched off. See Email notifications.
