Emoji

Emoji add a small picture to text: a rocket for a launch, a check mark for done, a warning sign for a catch. In a wiki they work best as signposts that help readers scan: ✅ beside what is finished, ❌ beside what is not. Tesria keeps an emoji as an ordinary character of text, so it can be searched for, copied and exported like any letter.

Insert it

Type : at the start of a line or after a space, then at least two letters of the emoji’s name, such as :rock for 🚀. Choose one with Enter or a click. The list also matches other words for each emoji: :done finds ✅ and :ship finds 🎉 and 🚀. Emoji are not in the + menu.

Typing a colon and a name lists the matching emoji.

The list offers 40 emoji that wikis use most. For any other, use your computer’s own picker and it goes in like any character: Control-Command-Space on a Mac, the Windows key and period on Windows, or the emoji key on a phone’s keyboard.

Changing and removing it

An emoji is a character like any other: select it and type over it, or press Backspace after it to remove it.

Good practice

• A few, with a job to do. An emoji that marks something helps; a row of them is noise.

• Keep the words. Screen readers read an emoji’s name aloud, and some readers are not sure what a picture means. “✅ Done” is clearer than ✅.

• Same emoji, same meaning, all through a space.
